Florida Solar Scams Are Destroying Homeowners: Here's What to Know Before You Buy
Families across Southwest Florida are signing 25-year solar contracts and ending up worse off than before. Here is what solar scams look like, how to spot them, and what to do if you have already signed.

Families in Sarasota, Port Charlotte, and across Southwest Florida are signing 25-year solar contracts and ending up worse off than before. Here is what is actually happening, and how to protect yourself.
If you have had a door-to-door solar salesperson knock on your door recently, you are not alone. Solar panels are being sold aggressively across Southwest Florida right now. And while solar can absolutely save you money, a wave of solar installation scams is leaving homeowners locked into brutal financial situations they cannot get out of.
A recent investigative news report out of the Treasure Coast exposed exactly what is happening. Families who bought solar panels in 2022 and 2023 are still paying full FPL electric bills every month, on top of $127 to $168 monthly loan payments on solar systems that cost $40,000 or more. One couple saw their total monthly energy costs jump by as much as 73%. And they are locked in for 25 years.
If you are considering going solar in the Sarasota to Punta Gorda corridor, you need to read this first.
What the Solar Scam Actually Looks Like
The pattern is consistent. A salesperson shows up at the door, sometimes targeting seniors specifically, pitching the promise of little to no electric bill. They lean hard on FPL rate increases. They make it sound like a no-brainer.
What they do not always make clear:
- The solar loan is a separate 25-year financial obligation, often $40,000+, regardless of what your panels actually produce
- The installation contract may include language explicitly stating no guarantees on utility savings
- If the installation company goes bankrupt (and many have), your 25-year production warranty disappears, but your loan does not
- Solar panels can trigger a lien on your property, making it extremely difficult to sell your home unless a buyer agrees to take over your loan
The investigative report identified at least 15 solar installation companies that filed for bankruptcy between 2022 and January 2025 alone. Two companies specifically named, Lumia Holdings (formerly Atlantic Energy) and Sunova, both filed for Chapter 11. Lumia reported hundreds of millions in liabilities. Sunova reported over $10.5 billion.
A consumer protection attorney who reviewed cases like these says she gets calls nearly every day from Florida homeowners in the same situation. Once a company goes bankrupt, she says, there is no entity left to pursue legal recourse against. The loan stays. The warranty is gone.
Why Southwest Florida Homeowners Are Being Targeted
Door-to-door solar sales have exploded across Florida's Gulf Coast. Sarasota, North Port, Port Charlotte, and Punta Gorda have all seen aggressive canvassing, much of it targeting retirees and seniors on fixed incomes.
Court records cited in the investigation reveal that some companies used sales scripts and training videos specifically designed to identify homes likely to have elderly occupants. The complaint against one company alleged more than 1,500 consumer grievances for deceptive practices.
Florida's climate makes solar a legitimate option. But that same desirability has created an environment where predatory companies can move fast, sign contracts, and disappear, leaving homeowners holding the bag.
The Real Cost Nobody Talks About
Here is what the math actually looks like for a family who buys into the wrong solar deal:
- Solar loan payment: $150-$168/month on a $40,000-$42,000 loan
- Remaining FPL bill: $90-$100+/month (because the panels do not fully offset usage)
- Total monthly energy cost: $240-$270+, up from roughly $150 before solar
- Contract term: 25 years, with no exit
Compare that to what they were promised: lower bills, energy independence, peace of mind.
One couple profiled in the news report, senior citizens on a fixed income, had their total energy costs increase by 73%. They cannot get out of the contract. They cannot reach the installation company. And they cannot sell their home without disclosing the lien.
That is not a solar success story. That is a trap.
What to Look for in a Legitimate Solar Company
Not every solar company operates this way. Reputable installers exist, and solar genuinely can reduce your energy costs when it is done right. The key is knowing what separates a trustworthy company from one that will be filing Chapter 11 two years from now.
Before you sign anything, ask these questions:
How long has the company been operating in Florida? New companies with no local track record are higher risk.
Can you show me real production data from past installations in this area? Any reputable company should have this.
What happens to my warranty if your company goes out of business? If they cannot answer clearly, that is a problem.
What is the realistic impact on my FPL bill? Get it in writing. Vague promises about "little to no electric bill" are not a contract.
What is the lien situation? Understand exactly how the financing affects your property title before you sign.
Who is the financing through? Some solar loans are with third-party lenders, independent of the installation company. That can actually be protective if the installer goes under.
Red flags to walk away from:
- High-pressure door-to-door pitches with same-day signing pressure
- Promises of zero electric bills with no documentation
- No local office or physical presence
- Contracts that are vague on production guarantees
- Reluctance to let you have the contract reviewed before signing
Your Rights If You Have Already Signed
If you are already in a situation like the families described above, you are not completely without options.
Consult a consumer protection attorney familiar with Florida solar contracts. Some are taking these cases on contingency.
File a complaint with the Florida Attorney General's Office, which has previously taken action against solar companies for deceptive practices.
Document everything: every promise made verbally, every document signed, every communication with the company.
If the company has filed for bankruptcy, an attorney can advise on whether there are still avenues for relief through the bankruptcy proceedings.
It is not easy. But you are not alone, and there are people fighting these cases.
Why Who You Choose Matters More Than the Panels Themselves
Solar technology is largely commoditized. The panels from one major manufacturer to another are not wildly different. What actually determines whether going solar is a win or a disaster is the company you work with.
Are they established? Do they stand behind their work? Are they going to be around in five years to honor a warranty claim? Do they give you straight numbers or just tell you what you want to hear?
At S7 Solar, we serve homeowners from Sarasota down to Punta Gorda, and we have watched what is happening in this market. The practices described in this report are not the norm everywhere, but they are common enough that every homeowner deserves to know about them before making a decision.
We would rather lose a sale by being straight with you than close a deal that leaves you worse off. If you have questions about what solar could realistically do for your home, your bills, and your property, reach out. No pressure. No door-to-door tactics. Just honest numbers.
The Bottom Line
Solar energy works. It can meaningfully reduce your energy costs, increase your home's value, and reduce your dependence on utility rate increases. But a bad solar deal, with the wrong company, on misleading terms, backed by financing you do not fully understand, can do real damage.
Florida families are learning that the hard way right now.
Do your homework. Ask hard questions. And make sure the company you are trusting with a 25-year commitment actually plans to be around for 25 years.
